Often times, the most compelling success stories are those that present seemingly insurmountable hurdles and how wide the polarity before the rags became riches. In other words, the poorer one is, the better the story. That poses a problem, it disregards the hard work before it got to the success part. And the story simply stops at the riches.
Be that as it may, success stories are often times benchmarked on the dollar signs. Given that premise, Manny Pacquiao has success written all over him. Not only is he commanding a fat sum on his every fight, this man is legit. Three times he was named as Fighter of the Year (2006, 2008 and 2009). That obviously made him the Fighter of the Decade. If that isn't enough to put fear on every contender, he is also named the best pound for pound fighter.
Boxing apparently became a springboard for other endeavors for this high school drop-out. He ventured into politics and is now representing his hometown in the Philippine Congress. Acknowledging his humble beginnings, he is seen on a weekly television game show in The Philippines where he dons the role of an everyday Santa, doling out cash to the poor. And more recently, expressing that he now lives a reformed life, he agreed to become the Roman tickets for mayweather vs pacquiao-ambassador to encourage congregants to read the Bible.
Pacquiao not only stings like a bee, he's also busy as a bee. Elsewhere he's the first eight division world champion. But back home, he's more than a boxer. He is their success story, looked up to as an inspiration and proof that there is a better life even if you were born into poverty.
Now that Manny Pacquiao has carved a name in every field that matters in his home country, that is sports, politics and show business, do we brace ourselves for an impending retirement? Now that he's spread his reach in most aspects of public life in his home country, is that enough for us to say he has in fact, prepared his activity after retirement. |
